    1 ) 
 Please send " ALL " detailed " Architectural Drawings " ( Plans & Elevations In CAD ) ( In pdf format ) clearly showing all measurements of the auditorium hall & its surrounding foyer, etc,etc.by E-Mail.

( Actual photograph is also most welcome ).

- Indicate whether its a READY building or under construction..............

- When is the building civil work completion expected.............

-  Proposed  INAUGURATION TIME of the READY AUDITORIUM.

- Also inform its " Full address " as to inside the town or how far away from it............,how far from RLY STN, BUS STN, AIRPORT......, etc.

- All this data helps me in arriving at a proper consultancy fees.

- MOST AUDITORIUMS are MULTI-PURPOSE. please indicate ANY SPECIAL use of YOUR auditorium.

 
2 )   I will study the drawings in detail & suggest my fees ( Fixed Lumpsum ,Not related to cost of project ).
  
 
3 ) If found reasonable, You can send us a very detailed printed order along with required  50 % advance.

       ( Cheque in name of Tushar Mody ).

     


4 ) If a visit is paid for, I will come and  Check your site in detail for noise,etc,etc, using a sound level meter.

       ( and also collect more detailed drawings ).

 
5 ) If not........., then, Along with the ORDER and ADVANCE........., NOW, you can also send other drawings like..........

                Complete a/c plan........,

                ducting layouts...........,

                lighting plans............,

                 your proposed seating plans.........,

                 fire fighting plans, smoke detectors, air fresheners..........., ,etc,etc.

6 ) On receipt of this complete DATA .........NOW............,I will start working on your drawings........... & given DATA............

I will form a CLEAR PICTURE of your project in my mind & Start thinking in terms of it's acoustical solution.

I will Do all the required ACOUSTICAL CALCULATIONS & decide on the required acoustical  " Technical "  specifications for all internal  surfaces, based on the PROPOSED use of the hall,
to prevent ............



                                                              EXCESSIVE reverberation & echoes,
                                                              standing waves,
                                                              creep echo,
                                                              slap echo,
                                                              flutter echo,
                                                              resonance,
                                                              comb-filtering,
                                                              feedback to microphone,

( 7 )  My written report will be by E-Mail. ( OR HAND WRITTEN ).
 
 Any sketches which I prepare to explain you the concept of acoustics will be HAND-DRAWN .( This is enough because I am only trying to explain a concept to you............)

( My drawings can NEVER be used for execution..........It is meant ONLY for architects to under stand the required acoustical concepts..............that's all )
  
( 8 )   I will also Submit a standard and simple design & knowledge of sound proof door & window ......., which you can also use  in all your other projects.........., throughout your life..............

(A big
benefit for architects ).    

  You have to adopt this knowledge to design the doors for the auditorium ........... ( and Windows it at all required  )............


( 9  )   On reciept of my written  report.........., SKETCHES........, technical specs........, etc

and ALSO as to WHAT SORT of........... LIBERTY .........       is available to YOU .............

so you can add as much AESTHETICS as you can AFFORD ........OR......... you LIKE.........( WHATEVER your CRITERIA ).






   WHAT do I mean by "TECHNICAL " specifications.

Suppose, for a particular hall or auditorium, I have decided that the FLOOR should be made of MARBLE............

This means that you should most desirably, go for marble.............

I want marble ONLY as a TECHNICAL MATERIAL.............

 you can use the most EXPENSIVE IMPORTED ITALIAN MARBLE or the cheapest available in the market. ..........

It does not matter ACOUSTICALLY...........

The design........... you provide in fixing the various marble tiles or big slabs........,the IN-LAY design............ which you provide,the border design........ which you provide

are the .......Liberties available to you............

I may suggest some designs...........,BUT it will never be FORCED on you.

( YOU........ are the GOOD AESTHETIC designer............... ,I....... am only a technical consultant cum designer. ).


Similarly , if I have asked for Wood veneer or a LAMINATE on any surface it means you can use ANY BRAND you like..........., ANY colour you like...........,ANY DESIGN YOU like............. etc,etc.

If I have suggested a perforated tile,you can use any BRAND..........., ANY DESIGN...............

If it is carpet, wood flooring, sports flooring, Rubber flooring, PVC flooring, etc You can select ANY BRAND.........., ANY COLOUR......, ANY DESIGN...........

                                   A Similar thinking is to be adopted for other ,more critical surfaces of the auditorium.


Once the BASIC CONCEPT Of DESIGN is CLEAR to the concerned interior designer,he can start thinking in terms of EXACT MATERIALS which "HE"/ "SHE" would LOVE to use.

So, NOW YOU will design EVERYTHING & prepare CAD Drawings.


you are a GOOD Interior designer, hence, you will have far better ideas of the OVERALL looks of the internal areas of the hall.

You have the liberty of using any material you like from the existing range of acoustical products in the market.

Please note that even if you want to use any NON-STANDARD, UN-USUAL, material in the auditorium,I am always willing to support you.

and STUDY your PROPOSED MATERIAL & it's APPLICATION on any particular surface. and give my comments,on its acoustical suitability for this particular project.

( If you wish You can prepare just one design and get it approved or you can work out various alternatives to satisfy your clients.

  It will be my duty to study ALL your prepared designs and report back to you about its acoustical correctness. )


  
10 )   If required I can provide you with addresses of some acoustical material manufacturers.

    you will have to ask for their samples, catalogs ,prices, etc.They all will be more then happy to attend to you.


    
    AUDITORIUM CHAIRS :-

You have the liberty of using any chair you like based on my " ACOUSTICAL " guidelines.


   SEATING CAPACITY :-

   I do not interfere here.

   It is between you and the OWNERS.

   I personally believe in giving COMFORT to the audience by providing

   a) Good Air- Conditioning.

 b) CLEAR SIGHT -LINES :-

          I will give my recommended SPACE between ROWS OF SEAT.....

         & THE RISER - STEP - HEIGHT to achieve the upward... slope of seating floor area from...........

       STAGE FRONT............ towards the............  REAR OF AUDITORIUM.

        ( Till the LAST ROW Or Projector Room )

    CHOICE IS TOTALLY yours to follow or not.

    Plenty of people like to go out to attend to their mobiles..........

    So getting out of the rows should be EASY....specially in this NET AGE........

    YEARS back this was NOT A MAJOR PROBLEM........

( You will be SHOCKED to know that I have seen some RECENT , VERY VERY POSH looking AUDITORIUM in MUMBAI ,  with so little SPACE between the ROWS that I could see all the ladies feeling extremely embarrassed to reach to their seats by passing through seated ADULTS, whose legs they had to AVOID.)

( Even in general...the space to relax your legs was not there. )     
                                                          
                                                    
    ( I don't do the seat lay outs.)


     SEATING CAPACITY CREATED ,by strictly following a proper space between rows and the correct RISERS STEP HEIGHT is the BEST POSSIBLE CAPACITY.

       There is NO OTHER RULE.




    Everything Else is a Compromise.

     THE BIGGEST MISTAKE WE MAKE in " PLANNING " is  "ASSUMING that all persons are of EQUAL HEIGHT ".

      THINK OVER...................All sort of people are expected in an auditorium. & many times a FULL DAY Seminar is to be attended.


       Imagine somebody's inconvenience....... if a tall..... and hefty....... person is in front of him.......  for a WHOLE DAY..............................




       c)   Safety against FIRE :- 

              Viz :-Maximise Foyer areas...

              Maximise EXIT doors.....

              Do NOT provide ANY LOCKING DEVISE, stoppers, etc on all "internal" EXIT DOORS...of the auditorium hall.

              ONLY a spring DOOR CLOSURE should be used, which can keep the doors in a  closed position.

              Minimise the use of MATERIALS which CATCH FIRE " VERY EASILY " & SPREAD it.



     Acoustics can also be DESIGNED using ONLY HARD SURFACES....which never BURN.


               
      Imagine the safety of human beings

   SOUND SYSTEM :-


 Our associates for  specifying, supply & installation of audio system can be introduced only after our acoustical consultancy is finalised.

      At the same time........,if you have your own ........." known "........supplier of such equipments......., I have ABSOLUTELY no objection to it.........
              

   
   I have a very clear view on speakers.. & its Function in an Auditorium .

           
                        ( All high End speakers are good & plenty of GOOD BRANDS are available )      


   ( A DEALER will keep praising his own " BRAND "sound systems by using complicated  acoustical words  )


     ( You may tend to get INFLUENCED by their  POSH DEMO ROOM........, 

         LOOKS OF the SPEAKERS..........,etc,etc  )






                                      BUT THE FACT IS THAT... 


                                              The sound which is finally " HEARD " and " JUDGED " by the audience is  :-  


                                                           50  %  result of production of "CLEAR SOUND"..... by the installed SOUND SPEAKERS.

                                                           50   %   result of " GOOD ROOM ACOUSTICAL treatment done in that VENUE ".


                                            =    100 %   ( GOOD SOUND  FOR AUDIENCE )

           (((((((    NOT AN Approximation......  WHICH PLEASE NOTE     ))))))
                                          

       When the ROOM ACOUSTICS is correct.........,all  GOOD speakers sound VERY GOOD and BAD speakers  will sound a bit less  BAD..........( THINK OVER )


       Even a GOOD & VERY VERY EXPENSIVE SPEAKER placed in a hall with poor ACOUSTICS will immediately sound BAD.     
 
       ( Which means acoustics is bad,.............   ( But not the speaker ).


        In Fact......, for a moment...., if you assume....... that ALL speakers are GOOD........ & produce a very very clear sound...............

  
         THEN........ it is ONLY ROOM ACOUSTICAL treatment..... that is AFFECTING what you are about to LISTEN......................


Here is Another Excellent Example

It is like assuming that water available is always good ,clean & clear.

NOW, just pour it in a CLEAN GLASS.......... & DRINK........without worry.......

Similarly POUR GOOD SOUND............ in a CLEAN AUDITORIUM.......... 


  ( Clean auditorium means.... 


" auditorium with correct acoustics " )


 and "DRINK " with your EARS........


  This means that the Importance of ROOM ACOUSTICS is  100  %. ( compared to  50 %  as  I just indicated earlier ............).

  Everything depends on which way you look at the problem of acoustics................
.

   Think hard and you REALISE the importance of CORRECT ROOM ACOUSTICS................


    & why people are STILL suffering  due to a jumble of confusing knowledge.............which does not allow them to take right decision.

   so friends, depending on your budgets you can select the sound systems.


                Don't Worry about SOUND SYSTEMS.

               THINK ONLY OF OVER ALL LOOKS.

               SELECT your sound system EARLY  .
             
               and start designing it's proper  and Stream Lined place at the STAGE,

               so it should not look as if it was fitted hurriedly at the LAST MOMENT.

          Although I may not have much to offer by way of suggestions,I would definitely want full information of what is being selected. As I am trying my best to increase my involvement , more & more, in sound systems basics and ........

   offer some interesting conclusions for the benefit of the users..


I have attended plenty of DEMO of SOUND SYSTEMS and my research and THINKING continues.............
     
       So , a copy of quotation  of sound system should always be sent to me.

Their proposed location of speakers is also very important for BALCONY..........  and UNDER BALCONY AREA..............

My simple guidelines of speaker locations will work wonders...............

  I have no checking systems for sound.

  OUR ears are the best judge.

  Even those softwares which claim to check the correctness of sound admit this fact.

Remember that each room in any house............ is an AUDITORIUM.

Once you understand my this KNOWLEDGE............, you will be satisfied..............

SOUND cannot HAPPEN In a Vacuum............... IT can HAPPEN ONLY THROUGH a MEDIUM.............

So, once you know what is HAPPENING in the AIR at a very      ATOMIC & MOLECULAR LEVEL      & it's inter-action with


    ALL MATERIALS,  you start understanding sound.


Also, you will notice that ONLY FOUR POSSIBILITIES are there....




       ( A ) GOOD SPEAKERS           +              GOOD ACOUSTICS         The BEST COMBINATION...The audience hears the BEST SOUND...

       ( B ) GOOD SPEAKERS           +               BAD ACOUSTICS         =     The Problem Begins.( you REALISE something is WRONG with ACOUSTICS ....)

       ( C ) BAD SPEAKERS              +               GOOD ACOUSTICS      =      Acoustics helps  in saving the day...( speakers can be changed )

       ( D ) BAD SPEAKERS              +                BAD ACOUSTICS        =      The WORST CASE....TOTAL DISASTER....


 11 )    I have no advise  to offer on Video-conferencing equipments....., projectors...., lighting.....,Screens....,stage lighting......,cyclorama....., pulley systems to change the scenery screen......, above the stage, although I know a few suppliers and have lot of CATALOGS on such products..


     ( I ADVISE ONLY when I get a FIRM GRIP on the SUBJECT )
       
    ( AUDITORIUM ACOUSTICS itself is a BIG subject, where NOW I have a firm GRIP and AMAZING CLARITY OF CONCEPT. Hence I am a Consultant ).   
 
12 )  I am a pure " TECHNICAL " consultant.

         I never look at the price. 

         My entire effort is towards the  " acoustics "

        .My duty is to keep a constant check on acoustical aspects of all the  inputs in the  
          proposed auditorium.

         I will be TOTALLY responsible for the acoustics. 

         If any thing is going wrong, it will be my DUTY to warn you.
 
13 )  

      Price estimate can be provided by any good contractor. If required I can suggest specialised, highly                       experienced auditorium contractors.
 
14 ) 

     To prepare detailed CAD drawings for EXECUTION is  now YOUR Scope.Correspondence will be through a       courier or E-MAIL.
 
15) 

      Most preferably any ONE person from your side should be     Constantly  dealing with me.
 
 
16 ) 

    I will thoroughly check your drawings of proposed acoustical treatment for various surfaces guided by my           technical specs & send it back with any suggestions of  changes if any.
 
17 )  

   You can prepare a bill of materials, tender etc. Ask all your known  interior contractors to quote for it.

  Award the contract depending on your criteria. They will procure material. which can be checked as per my          guidelines.( SINCE I may not be at the site. )
 
18 ) 

      If required I can make paid  visits to check the work.

      During execution I only check the Acoustical Correctness of the material & its installation.

( To check the strength of
installation,.......workmanship,.......aesthetics,......timely completion,.......etc,etc........ is in your scope,which please note.
 
         ( I have no checking systems for Audio- systems.)

         Audio checking is only by human  ears, ( FOR WHOM it is ULTIMATELY Installed ).

     
The Audience Does not come with Sound Analysers.........

          They come with their " Ears "......

         .and we have to satisfy those " Ears "..........Hope you understand what I am trying to say.
 
19 )

     You can pay the balance fees on successful opening of the auditorium or six months from award of contract,           which ever is earlier.

20 )      The GIST  :-


                  You give  a HUNDRED variety of materials to a poor designer......... Yet, he can't give you good design.

                        
           You give just TEN kind of materials to a good designer.........

             & he can come up with AMAZING DESIGNS & a SMASHING OVER-ALL LOOKS.
 
          LOOKS IS MORE IMPORTANT.................   ACOUSTICS is SOMETHING which is invisible. 

          You don't have to " SEE " Acoustics.

         As soon as the audience enters the auditorium they should be impressed with the " Looks ".

          Sound they will experience once the programme starts.
 
      All materials were available, all designers were available. Yet HAFEEZ  CONTRACTOR came & changed the whole Scene of GENERAL INTERIOR       DECORATION   and ALSO of Building EXTERIOR DESIGNS


                                                 This is what you have to do NOW.
 
                                                 My easy guidelines will work wonders.
 
     You don't have to handover the auditorium to somebody & accept his       Limited design capability.   


                                 ( you may not be allowed to interfere in their designs )
 
                                          In my case full liberty is available to you.
 
    This also applies to residential sound-proofing of BEDROOMS........
